1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs, room temperature
1 cup milk
½ cup melted butter or neutral oil
4 ounces baking chocolate, melted and slightly cooled
1 cup hot water
Frosting (Optional but Recommended)
½ cup butter, softened
⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3 cups powdered sugar
⅓ cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Make the Cake
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9-inch round cake pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add eggs, milk, melted butter or oil, and melted chocolate. Mix just until combined.
Slowly stir in the hot water until the batter is smooth and pourable.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
Bake for 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean.
Let the cake cool completely before frosting.
Make the Frosting
Beat butter until soft and creamy.
Add cocoa powder and powdered sugar alternately with milk.
Mix in vanilla and beat until smooth and spreadable.
Frost the cooled cake as desired.
Notes
Don’t overmix the batter — stop as soon as everything comes together.
This cake tastes even better the next day as the chocolate flavor deepens.
If refrigerating leftovers, bring slices back to room temperature before serving.
