Ingredients
For the Cake
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 cup milk
½ cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
For the Frosting
¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
3 cups powdered sugar
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3–4 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch pan or two round cake pans.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Stir gently just until combined. Do not overmix.
Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out with a few moist crumbs.
Let cake cool completely before frosting.
For frosting, beat butter until smooth. Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, vanilla, and salt. Beat until spreadable.
Frost cooled cake and decorate as desired.
Notes
This cake works best when mixed gently. Stop as soon as the flour disappears.
Oil keeps the cake moist longer than butter, especially for parties.
A few crumbs on the toothpick are better than a clean one. Overbaking dries chocolate cake quickly.
